Security in Southeastern European Security & the U.S. - Greek Relationship (Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis Special Report))

About this book

A setting of both tremendous economic opportunity and lagging economic development, a corner of Europe closest to the turbulent Middle East, and a crossroads of three major civilizations, Southeastern Europe poses challenges of unparalleled complexity to security planners in the United States and throughout the West. At the pivot of this uncertain setting stands the bilateral U.S.-Greek relationship, itself a critical dimension of the stake of the broader Atlantic Alliance in the security of the region. After a period of turmoil and mutual distrust during the decade of the 1980s, in recent years the Greek-U.S. tie has emerged as a key factor in the accomplishment of broader U.S. regional objectives. This volume brings together perspectives from senior officials and commentators from both the United States and Greece on the status and prospects of the U.S.-Greek relationship, and the implications of such pressing questions as the unfolding security setting of the Balkans; stability in the Aegean; the future of the Greek-Turkish relationship; and the question of Cyprus.
