Writing in the January 1912 issue of Ha-Shiloah, the journal edited by the great ideologue of Cultural Zionism, Achad Ha-Am, Joseph Luidor (who would be murdered by Arabs in Jaffa during the riots of 1921) made an explicit and provocative distinction between 'the new Jew', pioneering in the ancient homeland of Palestine, and the Diaspora Jew, who stayed behind in the countries of dispersion.
