Abstract: A wide variation in height of human beings is taken for granted, yet 95% of all children are within a normal range. An orthopedic view of the normal physical development of children from birth through adolescence provides a framework for parents to understand what is normal in growth patterns. Some topics addressed are medical terms, communication with the doctor, hospitalization, medical history, injuries and athletic stress. Diagrams illustrate bone and joint structures, posture, and normal and abnormal development for infants, children, adolescents, and young athletes. Special problems associated with cerebral palsy, bone diseases, hereditary factors, or fractures are also discussed.
