After many years, Walt Dressler, small town lawyer and ex-D.A., is contacted by his rich, brilliant, college roommate, Emil Hornstein, who wants him to run for state senator. Dressler is an idealist much concerned with the political and social cancer of his time, the moral corruption of the individual. This idealism leads him into a grueling campaign and also leads him back to the old St. Lorraine House, now the property of the beautiful Lousia Montgolfier, of the sad eyes. His battle with the most powerful newspaper in the state, and with the political columnist who is determined to destroy him, brings into sharp focus the individual responsibility of each person and dramatizes the battle of the forces of good and evil.
