He casts himself as a tough, sharp shooting "Robin Hood," standing up for widows and mistreated unfortunates. Even if you take his account with a large grain of salt, it is still a window into the times and into attitudes and habits of the late 1800s. It may make you appreciate how much we have mellowed as a society.
