It was on the 15th of September. I am particular as to the date, for it marked the cruelest tragedy that ever darkened a young girl's life. The night was stormy and intensely dark, save for the vivid flashes of lighting that lit up the wild mountain scene with a white, awful glare for an instant, at intervals, then died out, leaving the rugged slopes to the darkness and the terrible storm.
