To interpret any philosopher's work appropriately, it is important to understand the concerns that motivate him: unless we have some appreciation of what view he is opposing, and thus what points he is most concerned to prove, in can be hard to distinguish between those claims that are central to his philosophy and those that merely took for granted because they were not at the time significantly in dispute.
