About this book

Examines the condition of the Jews in Venice in the 16th-17th centuries, with the establishment of the ghetto and the introduction of special limitations and discriminations. States that the German Jews who lived in the city for many years respected the "agreement" with the Christian authorities, while Jews and Conversos who were new immigrants were less careful and exposed themselves to persecution. With the introduction of the Inquisition in 1547 the existence of the Conversos became precarious although only 5% of the trials concerned Judaizers. States that in Venice the Inquisition was concerned with marginal people, Conversos and Christians alike, non-conformists within a conformist society. Analyzes the trials of those accused of Judaizing.
