Although Afro-Cuban Jazz symbolically began when Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo met in 1947, the same can be said about Mario Bauza's composing of "Tanga" for Machito's orchestra in 1943, Machito's putting together of his first successful big band in 1940, Don Azpiazu's arrival in the United States in 1930, pianist Jelly Roll Morton's utilization of a tango rhythm in his 1923 recording of "New Orleans Blues," or W.C. Handy's use of a habanera syncopation for the "B" section of "St. Louis Blues" during the 1910s.
