Following the first description by Furchgott and Zawadzki (1) of an essential role for the endothelium in mediating the relaxations to acetylcholine in mammalian arteries, the question was posed whether or not the response represented a pharmacological curiosity (because of the ubiquitous enzyme acetylcholinesterase, acetylcholine is not a substrate usually considered a circulating hormone).
