Students of Jeffers (and I am one) are fond of reminding their more orthodox colleagues-those who argue the period from about World War I to World War II should be termed "the Pound era" or "the Stevens era" or "the H. D. era," etc.-that there was a time when many thoughtful readers believed Jeffers was the poet of his generation.
