Caribbean crust is composed of four different types: (1) continental crustal blocks with a pre-Mesozoic basement, (2) continental crust formed during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, (3) oceanic crust thickened by a mid-Cretaceous flood basalt event, and (4) normal oceanic crust formed during the Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous by seafloor spreading between North and South America (e.g., Pindell and Barrett 1990 and references therein).
