Founded at Manchester in England, in the industrializing turmoil of the mid-18th century by a small dissident group from the Society of Friends, the original "Believers" (as they were to call themselves) were soon known derisively as "Shaking Quakers" or "Shakers" (the latter an insult they never renounced and indeed accepted as a useful brief label), for the fervor and zeal associated with their ritual religious dance, which they based on biblical precedents.
