THERE is an old Spanish proverb which runs: "Quien no nudo puerdo punto"-he who does not tie the knot loses the end (of his string), which I take to mean in my case that if I tarry longer in setting forth the events of my youth, and in idle and cowardly sort refrain from giving thanks to a merciful Providence for deliverance from sundry and great perils which have darkened the hour-glass of my life, I shall put my posterity to short shrift to discover the true course of certain policies and ventures which have decided the fortunes of our house.
