"The research reported in this book began with random personal observations of Black women who were quitting their jobs, and Dr. Pennington made an attempt to determine their stated reasons for doing so. This research took place over a span of three years. Dr. Pennington presented a travelling one-woman stage presentation portraying the nineteenth-century Black woman activist and spiritualist, Sojourner Truth.
