"This revisionist study is the first to consider the original wall paintings of Salisbury Cathedral, the flagship of thirteenth-century religious reform. Focusing on the monumental cycle of vault paintings that adorned the eastern arm, this study argues that the paintings were an integral component of the cathedral church as it was planned out before 1220. Reintegrating the paintings into an assessment of the building as a whole brings to light the significance of the images for shaping the aesthetic and liturgical dimensions of the building's eastern arm. This study shows that the paintings were designed to function in tandem with the liturgy of the building, as it was codified contemporaneously in the Use of Sarurn."--Jacket.
