Houston, a British minister and Biblical scholar, sees the Bible as a guide for creating justice in human life. He refutes the old adage that "life isn't fair" by stating that it should be and that Christians can find the keys to ending inequality in both the Old and New Testaments. He is well aware that a literal reading turns up what seem to be conflicting directions, however, Houston understands the history of the writing of the Bible and cautions the reader against a too facile interpretation, especially in one of the many translations. Throughout, he stresses the common thread of brotherhood and responsibility for others, as well as forgiveness and atonement. He sees the beliefs about human fairness expressed in the Bible as applicable to all people today.
