'That I am part of the earth my feet know perfectly' wrote Lawrence, 'cand my blood is part of the sea.' He believed passionately that the deeper man became enmeshed in industrial civilization, the less true he could be to himself- and for Lawrence the self, as Mr Young shows, must be founded on the elemental bases: the earth, the sun, true sexual communion. Lawrence's fiercest attacks were directed against those who deliberately denied these elemental forces, 'the purest essence of the external world'. He shocked and exhilarated his readers and his ideas profoundly influenced, and continue to influence, many writers. He is now one of the most widely translated authors of the previous century. Mr Kenneth Young was born in 1916 and studied under Professor Bonamy Dobrée at the English School, Leeds University, where he took First Class Honours in English Literature and Language. He was for some years a literary and dramatic critic of the Daily Telegraph . From 1960-5 he was Editor-in-Chief of the Yorkshire Post , and is now Political and Literary Adviser to Beaverbrook Newspapers. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. His books include a study of John Dryden (1954), a biography of A. J. Balfour (1963), Churchill and Beaverbrook: a study in Friendship and Politics (1966), Rhodesia and Independence (1967), Music's Great Days at the Spas and Watering-places (1968) and The Greek Passion (1969).
